About Georgia
Georgia Heard received the 2023 Excellence in Poetry for Children Award which honors a living American poet for their aggregate work for children ages 3-13.
She received her M.F.A. in poetry from Columbia University. She is a founding member of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project where she offered professional development in writing to hundreds of teachers, and taught writing in classrooms and schools in the New York City area for ten years. Georgia Heard is also the founder of The Poet’s Studio and has taught writing at Poet’s House, Teachers College, Columbia University, Gothenburg University, and in schools around the world.
She currently travels around the United States, and the world, giving keynotes and writing workshops in schools and conferences.
She is the author of 21 books. Her most recent poetry picture books are Welcome to the Wonder House (WordSong) (coauthored with Rebecca Kai Dotlich), My Thoughts Are Clouds: Poems for Mindfulness (Macmillan), and Boom! Bellow! Bleat! Animal Poems for Two Or More Voices (WordSong).
She is also the author of numerous professional books including Awakening the Heart and Heart Maps (Heinemann), and a coauthor of a book of poems titled A Field Guide to the Heart: Poems of Love, Comfort and Hope (Plumleaf Press).
She is the inventor of Heart Maps® and teaches online writing workshops at The Poet’s Studio.
