The Art of Nonfiction Poetry in Two Sessions with Georgia Heard, Rebecca Kai Dotlich and Guest Poets Joyce Sidman & Irene Latham
Dates: Thursday, January 9th & Tuesday, January 14th, 2025
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 EST on Zoom
Hosted by Georgia Heard and Rebecca Kai Dotlich with Guest Poets Joyce Sidman & Irene Latham
Join Georgia Heard, Rebecca Kai Dotlich, and guest poets Joyce Sidman (January 9th) and Irene Latham (January 14th) for a two-evening workshop focused on the art of nonfiction poetry. In today’s literary world, editors and publishers are increasingly seeking poetry collections that blend lyrical language with nonfiction elements, often including additional information as back matter. This workshop will explore the unique challenges of nonfiction poetry, such as conducting extensive research and integrating facts while preserving the poem's lyrical and musical qualities.
Each session will begin with Georgia Heard and Rebecca Kai Dotlich sharing specific tips and techniques for skillfully incorporating factual information into your poems.
On the first night, we are thrilled to welcome Joyce Sidman, the Newbery Honor-winning poet and acclaimed author of numerous books. Known for her remarkable ability to weave information about the natural world into her poetry, Joyce’s notable nonfiction titles include We Are Branches, Dear Treefrog, and Swirl by Swirl: Patterns in Nature. She will share her insights and process for creating nonfiction poetry, discussing how she integrates information about nature into her work.
On the second evening of our workshop, we will be joined by guest poet Irene Latham, the creator of many celebrated works, including novels, poetry collections, and picture books. Her notable titles include Can I Touch Your Hair? Poems of Race, Mistakes and Friendship and Dictionary of a Better World: Poems, Quotes and Anecdotes from A to Z, which she co-authored with Charles Waters. Irene will discuss her acclaimed book The Museum on the Moon: The Curious Objects on the Lunar Surface and share her insights into researching and crafting historical nonfiction poetry.
